    Dr. Martie Gillen

    Professor & State Extension Specialist

    Biography

    Dr. Martie Gillen is an associate professor and Extension specialist in the Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences. Dr. Gillen teaches undergraduate courses in human services, Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI), and personal and family financial planning. She also teaches the graduate capstone course. She serves as the program director for the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) program and the Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC) program. Her Extension programs focuses on trauma-informed practices for Extension, childhood trauma, TBRI, and personal and family financial planning. Dr. Gillen’s research program focuses on family stability, examining the factors, processes, interventions, and policies that promote resilience, cohesion, and well-being within families. Dr. Gillen serves on the editorial boards for Financial Services Review and the Journal of Financial Therapy.  

    She earned her Ph.D. from the Department of Family Studies at the University of Kentucky (UK). She also earned a Graduate Certificate in Gerontology and a Graduate Certificate in Applied Statistics from the UK. She earned a master’s degree in business administration from Sullivan University. She is a Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) Practitioner, Certified Family Life Educator, and an Accredited Financial Counselor. Dr. Gillen is a research affiliate of the Florida Institute for Child Welfare and the Christian Alliance for Orphans Research Center. She is a faculty affiliate of the Center on Children and Families at the UF Levin College of Law. Prior to her position at UF, Dr. Gillen served as assistant dean for finance and center administration in the College of Social Work at the University of Kentucky.
