BIOGRAPHY


Keith Diem is a Professor & Extension Specialist. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Purdue University, a Ph.D. in Extension Education from Ohio State University, and also earned teacher certification. Dr. Diem's focus is (1) program planning and evaluation, and (2) providing opportunity for all; with emphasis on youth development and serving underrepresented audiences. Dr. Diem began his career as a faculty member in 1982; serving as a County 4-H Agent, County Extension Department Head, and Program Leader in Educational Design with Rutgers Cooperative Extension in New Jersey for 20 years. He has served as a Regional Extension Director for the Oregon State University Extension Service, Associate Dean & Program Leader for 4-H Youth Development as well as Assistant Director for Special Initiatives with UF/IFAS Extension. In addition, he previously served as Director of 4-H Youth Development in South Carolina and Professor of Youth Development Leadership at Clemson University where he continued to serve as an adjunct instructor from 2007-2016.

Current/recent efforts:

  • Conducting training for faculty, staff, students, and collaborators of the Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences (IAG) and for members of the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) project at the University of São Paulo (Brazil) regarding designing and evaluating extension programs, strategic planning, using social media for extension programming, etc.
  • Member, UF Faculty Senate & Faculty Senate Steering Committee (elected)
  • Conducting training in India for a variety of universities, institutes, and non-government organizations (NGOs).
  • Principal Investigator, “Using Social Media and Technology for Extension Program Delivery” pilot project
  • Conducting training locally and nationally for faculty/staff, community organizations, and youth on topics such as "Strategic Marketing & Program Transformation,” “Understanding Differences & Becoming Culturally Competent,” and “Planning for Impact," and “Using a Logic Model Approach to Program Development and Evaluation.”
  • Serving as member of UF President’s Council on Diversity, chair of NIFA national Champions for Underserved, Underrepresented Racial-Ethnic Youth Committee, UF Teaching Evaluation Task Force, etc.

Diem teaches undergraduate and graduate courses:

  • FYC4622 - “Planning and Evaluating Family, Youth and Community Science Programs.” Topics include designing programs for impact (program development models, writing “SMART” objectives, using a logic model for program planning and evaluation, research methods for program evaluation, surveys and questionnaire design, planning for differences in cultural norms, learning styles & generational differences in program participants, needs assessment and strategic planning/decision-making tools, using a marketing approach to program development, event/activity planning (logistics), utilization and management of staff and volunteers in program planning and delivery, strengthening collaboration and youth-adult partnerships to enhance community-based program development, interpreting & utilizing evaluation findings, communicating impact (writing impact statements, etc.).
  • FYC6932 (online) – “Principles and Practices of Diversity and Inclusion.” Topics include cultural norms, cultural competency, Civil Rights, religion and worldview, bias and privilege, differences in learning styles, marketing to diverse audiences, generational differences, etc.
  • FYC6620 (online) - “Program Planning & Evaluation for Human Service Delivery”

PROFESSIONAL/RESEARCH INTERESTS

Research interests include topics related to the following, particularly some intersection of:

  • Planning and evaluating family, youth, and community programs
  • Program development promoting understanding of human differences and building a culture of belonging in a global and diverse society; with special emphasis on effective strategies for engaging underrepresented audiences in family, youth, and community programs to achieve opportunity for all. 
  • Extension programs and 4-H Youth Development
