In the Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences we are committed to improving the well-being of individuals, families, and communities using applied, strengths-based research. Our work addresses critical issues such as youth development, family dynamics, prevention science, food and nutrition, housing and community design, financial literacy, artificial intelligence (AI), nonprofit leadership, and rural resilience. FYCS researchers work locally, throughout the state and country, and internationally.

We use rigorous research methods and foster collaborative networks to develop practical, evidence-based solutions. Our research informs policy and practice across sectors including education, healthcare, social services, and community development. At the heart of our work is a commitment to community-centered practice. We collaborate closely with the communities we serve, ensuring that our research responds to their unique strengths, challenges, and aspirations.

Our work often bridges research and Extension programs—whether through collaborative projects with county faculty or graduate students working closely with county agents at Extension offices. This ongoing partnership fosters meaningful dialogue that enhances both research and outreach, ultimately strengthening the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension efforts. Advanced Research Methods and Evaluation

Our work in advanced research methods and evaluation supports the development and application of rigorous research designs, data analysis techniques, and evaluation frameworks. FYCS researchers use both quantitative and qualitative methods to assess program effectiveness, inform policy, and generate actionable insights. This research strengthens the evidence base for interventions that improve lives by meeting the needs of the communities we serve.

In the rapidly emerging area of artificial intelligence, FYCS researchers explore how AI technologies can be ethically and effectively applied to support human development and the well-being of communities. We examine the use of AI in areas such as education, health promotion, and social services, with a focus on responsible innovation. This includes using AI and data science to understand how individuals respond differently to life experiences, and to design personalized, preventive strategies that promote behavioral and physical health.

Research in community development and resilience focuses on building strong, adaptive communities through inclusive development strategies and resilience planning. FYCS researchers study how social, economic, and environmental factors shape community well-being, and how communities respond to challenges such as natural disasters, economic shifts, and social challenges. Our work supports sustainable, community-led solutions such as disaster preparedness, that foster long-term vitality.

Research in family and interpersonal relationships explores the dynamics of relationships within families and across social networks. FYCS scholars examine how communication, parenting, caregiving, and relational stressors influence individual and family well-being. Our work informs practices and policies that strengthen family functioning, promote healthy relationships, and support resilience across the lifespan.

FYCS researchers in financial behavior and housing examine how individuals and families make financial decisions and navigate housing systems at the local, state, national, and international level. Our researchers explore topics such as financial literacy, housing stability, and economic stress, with a focus on promoting financial well-being and access to safe, affordable housing. The ability to assist households to maintain their residence in a healthy, safe manner is a pivotal component of our research.

Our health and wellness research promotes holistic well-being by integrating physical and behavioral health approaches. FYCS researchers investigate the social determinants of health, health behaviors, and access to health care. Our work informs messaging, interventions, and policies that support healthier individuals, families, and communities as well as help people understand the impacts of chronic conditions and how to manage those conditions. One example of our uniqueness is how our health and wellness researchers work together with Extension on projects like healthy aging (e.g., building your bones) that helps people mitigate the risk of future health issues that may not be tied to a specific disease or illness.

FYCS research in nonprofit leadership examines how mission-driven organizations operate, lead, and serve. We explore relationships between nonprofit organizations and their public funders, governance, strategic planning, volunteer management, and organizational effectiveness to support the capacity and sustainability of nonprofits. Our findings help strengthen leadership practices and enhance the impact of organizations working to improve lives and communities.

FYCS research in food systems and nutrition addresses the complex relationships between food access, dietary behavior, and community health. We study food insecurity, nutrition education, sustainable food systems, and food safety issues to inform programs and policies that promote access to nutritious food and support long-term health.

Prevention science research in FYCS focuses on identifying and reducing risk factors while promoting protective factors that support healthy development and well-being. We use qualitative (e.g., interviews and focus groups), quantitative (e.g., surveys), and mixed methods in studies that include analyzing large existing datasets and developing and testing new programs or interventions. Our work includes topics such as substance use, violence prevention, and mental health. We aim to understand what puts youth and families at risk and what helps them succeed.

FYCS youth development research focuses on helping young people grow into healthy, capable, engaged, and resilient individuals. We study how families, schools, communities, and policies influence youth outcomes, in areas such as mental health and wellbeing, emotional regulation, agency, leadership, and life skills. Our work also looks at the challenges youth face and the factors that protect against risky behaviors. Through hands-on research and strong community partnerships, we aim to create supportive environments where youth can thrive socially, emotionally, and academically.
