Dr. Tracy Johns

Biography
Tracy L. Johns is an Instructional Assistant Professor in the Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences at the University of Florida (UF) and serves as the Undergraduate Program Coordinator for the department. Dr. Johns earned a B.A. and M.A. in Sociology from the University of Florida and completed her Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of Florida in 2001 specializing in the study of Crime and Deviance and Race/Ethnicity. Dr. Johns has published in dozens of journals, including Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, Journal of Experimental Criminology, Journal of Applied Communications, and American Review of Politics, written multiple book chapters, and presented papers on a variety of topics including crime and deviance, food insecurity, racism in America, and survey methodology. Over the past 25 years, she has taught courses in data analysis, research methods, deviant behavior, and general sociology at the University of Florida.
At present, Dr. Johns teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in data analysis and research methodology for FYCS. Her overall research agenda deals with various dimensions of social inequality, often involving the intersectional impacts of race, gender, and social class. Current research initiatives are focused on volunteerism; needs in low-income communities in Florida, including affordable housing and services for children; and how race and gender impact STEM education in college settings. This work, and recent publications, incorporates a variety of data collection methodologies as well as macro and micro theories, in working to best understand the underlying origins and the most appropriate solutions of various social issues.
She served as the Research Director at the Florida Survey Research Center (FSRC) at UF for nearly 25 years and previously held several positions at UF, including a special faculty appointment as an ‘Associate In’ with the UF Department of Political Science, as a visiting professor in the UF Department of Sociology, and as a Research Associate Scientist in FYCS. In her role as a Research Director, she designed and oversaw the implementation of hundreds of research projects at the FSRC, work which she continued as a Research Scientist. Dr. Johns was responsible for the creation and design of survey instruments and focus group protocols; population sampling; managing survey implementation; overseeing the collection of quantitative and qualitative data; conducting and supervising data analysis; and writing reports to present the results of these research initiatives. She has an extensive background in conducting mail, telephone, online, and in-person surveys and focus groups, as well as secondary data analysis and program evaluation. Dr. Johns has directed research funded by grants from the NIJ, NIH, NIA, and USDA, among others.
