  • Update from Kathryn Ivey For Undergrads 3.23.20

I hope you are all well and adapting to the new “normal” for the remaining weeks of the spring semester. We all know and understand there are a lot of unknowns right now, but we promise to share with you all any and all changes as soon as we receive permission to communicate them with you.

Typically, the first week of Advanced Registration, I would hold walk-in hours. Due to changes, this week will operate like other weeks in that you will need to schedule a Zoom appointment if you want to meet with me. On Monday, March 23rd, I will hold advising via email only. Beginning Tuesday, March 24th, Zoom appointments will be available.

If I am your Assigned Academic Advisor (See your One.UF portal under “advising notes” and open the note to see your assigned person), you may use the link below. If I am not your assigned person, please use their link or email them directly. I will not be meeting with students who are not my advisees. You will be sent an email, copying your assigned person, requesting you meet with them.

    https://app.acuityscheduling.com/schedule.php?owner=13802233&calendarID=1273459

Please refer to the email sent out last week regarding all changes pertaining to practicum. This is a firm decision by the department. Below is a message from the FYCS Department Chair:

Given the information from the university, only students who will be graduating Summer 2020 will be permitted to enroll in FYC 4941 Summer C. If you are graduating Fall 2020 or Spring 2021, you will need to postpone your practicum experience. Our community is facing unprecedented uncertainty and has limited capacity to meet the needs of our graduating students.”

All Practicum questions must be sent to Dr. Emily Johnson (ejohnson719@ufl.edu).

    1. Summer 2020 courses

    a)      FYCS elective courses for the summer have been departmentally controlled for graduating seniors first. Graduating seniors will be asked to submit the attached form stating which course(s) they wish to enroll and the FYCS Advising office will add them to the course. Courses are capped, so we cannot guarantee space, however, we will try our best. Once we have made certain those seniors have been taken care of, we will open the remaining seats to you. Please do not ask to be added to a waiting list. Also, I do not know how soon this will be determined, but as soon as we do, an email will go out.

    b)     Courses for Summer A/C and even Summer B for FYCS may have days/class periods listed. These will be handled virtually similarly to the way classes are running now. Please make sure you take note of this when registering for courses particularly in Summer.

     4.      Fall 2020 courses

Fall 2020, for now, are scheduled to be back on campus. If this should change, we will share that with you as soon as we are told. You should be able to register for those courses without issue if you have met prerequisite courses and they are not departmentally controlled. Do not ask to be added to courses that are departmentally controlled especially those in other departments.

    5.      Spring 2020 Commencement

As you have already read, Spring Commencement has been moved, for the time being, to July 31st-August 2nd. If you have applied for Spring 2020 Graduation, you should have received an email with a survey asking about commencement. Please complete this ASAP. You may visit https://commencement.ufl.edu/spring/resources/faqs/ if you have additional questions.

If you requested to walk early, a decision has yet to be made as to which ceremony you will be eligible to participate. As soon as we are informed of that decision, you will be notified.

    -Kathryn

  • IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING CLASSES AND ADVISING 3.16.20

We hope you are all adapting to the changes for classes and campus activities due to precautions taken for the Coronavirus. We understand you are receiving a lot of emails about changes, however, the department wanted to post a message with information specific to FYCS.

    Classes:

Please continue to attend classes virtually and stay informed regarding campus activities. Classes are still meeting during regular class periods, so do not forget to attend class! Be sure to download Zoom if you have not already as this is the method most classes will be using to facilitate activities and course content.

    Practicum:

Summer Practicum deadlines are still in place. There are no plans at this time to change the April 3rd by 1pm deadline. Also, since April 3rd falls after the 2-week campus restrictions, hand delivered packets are still required. If something is to change, we will let you know via email.

    Advising:

Advising will be held via Zoom unless your assigned Academic Advisor has said otherwise. Other options for advising could be: Phone, Email, Skype, FaceTime, and Google Duo.

Advanced Registration for Summer and Fall:

Registration is to continue as usual. Please be sure to remove your holds and check for your assigned date and time. We will not register you before your assigned date and time. Also, if a course is departmentally controlled or outside the department, you will need to wait for it to become available. We will not override another departments restrictions. As for FYCS departmentally controlled courses, this will be primarily for Summer Courses. If you are not graduating in Summer 2020, you will not be permitted to register for these courses.

    Summer 2020 classes:

As of right now, Summer 2020 classes are to be held on campus. Any changes to this will be reflected in the Schedule of courses and via email.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to this office and/or your assigned academic advisor.

  • Practicum Update 3.18.2020

    Attention students:

Due to COVID-19, all state universities, including the University of Florida, are required to move all summer A/C classes online.  In response, the department has made some changes to the Summer C Practicum requirement.

Only students graduating Summer 2020 will be permitted to enroll in FYC4941.

For students graduating Summer 2020, please continue to read this message carefully and in its entirety. If you are not graduating Summer 2020, you can delete this message as it does not pertain to you.

    1)      The deadline to submit your packet has been extended to 1pm, Monday, April 27th

    2)      Packets must be emailed directly to Dr. Johnson (ejohnson719@ufl.edu) by the due date above.  In lieu of current campus restrictions, we will not accept hard copies. If you have already submitted a hard copy to the Advising Office, you do not need to resend via email.

    3)      For this summer’s practicum, you are not required to submit an Affidavit of Good Moral Character with your packet.

    4)      You are still required to obtain an original, ink-to-paper signature from your site supervisor. This means you should email your completed packet to your supervisor to review and have them print and sign ONLY the supervisor signature page. That signature page should be mailed directly to Dr. Johnson at:

    Dr. Emily Johnson

    c/o FYCS Advising

    P.O. Box 110310

    Gainesville, FL 32611

    5)      Your proposal is not considered complete until Dr. Johnson has received:

    1. Your packet electronically via email and
    2. Your Supervisor’s signature page via snail mail to the address listed above.

    6)      Because of COVID-19 guidelines, we are anticipating our students may be asked to work remotely. This is acceptable for the Summer C 2020 Practicum.

    7)      Due to the exceptional circumstances caused by the virus, the department has adjusted the required hours for the Summer C 2020 Practicum experience. Students are expected to work a minimum of 12 weeks, and earn a minimum of 180 hours. This equates to approximately 15 hours/week. This has been drastically reduced from the typical 240 hour requirement to adjust to the current climate.

    8)      If you are CFLE, please continue to work directly with Dr. Jen Doty (jennifer.doty@ufl.edu). She will work closely with Dr. Johnson to ensure you are meeting Practicum requirements.

    9)      All questions regarding Summer C 2020 Practicum must be directed to Dr. Emily Johnson (ejohnson719@ufl.edu) as she is the Practicum Coordinator for the department.

    10)   Once your packet has been approved, Dr. Johnson will enroll you in FYC4941—Practicum in FYCS.
