Graphic Elicitation, Photovoice and Participant Observation

The focus today is on two non-traditional and one more traditional way of interacting with research participants and collecting data. One method that is rapidly becoming widely used is graphic elicitation. This involves the use of graphs, diagrams, and maps (really any kind of visual display of how ideas relate to each other) to share ideas. Another is photovoice where researchers provide participants with cameras (if they don't have a good one) and participants take pictures and present them as "story lines" or "scripts" that express their ideas. I got to be involved with a high school research project in Bali that used photovoice methodlogy. It was fun -- for we researchers, for the students and "sort of" fun for the parents. The parents were surprised by what the students perceived of as "landscapes of high esthetic and cultural value." More about this in class if you are interested. This video (ignore the Fresh Market ad) is about a study in Madrid where the method was used to learn what people in a community in Madrid, Spain wanted in their local food system. It's in Spanish, but there are footers in English. The third technique is participant observation. Kind of contrary to the term "participant observation," the this approach focuses on the researcher immersing him/herself in the daily life of the research participants and learning about the phenomenon of interest through direct experience. This is the most traditional of the three.

Research Methods Reviews

I have assigned articles to five individuals for this week. Check the Week 14 -- April 08 Class Session discussion board in Canvas to see if you have an assignment. In case anyone needs it, here are the instructions for completing a review.
