Objectives

After completing this class, you will be able to:

• Use four different theoretical approaches to analyze how social order arises, persists, and/or weakens (structural functionalism, conflict, exchange, and symbolic interaction);
• Use ethnomethodology, dramaturgy, and dialogic acts to analyze and assign meaning to social interactions;
• Assess how relationships of status, power, authority, legitimacy and repression develop and are embedded in the everyday interactions between individuals and groups;
• Analyze and explain why different groups "see reality" differently; and
• Apply this analysis to the development of community-based programs and the public discourse about the needs, problems, and issues in communities and their resolution.
