TEA FOR HEART HEALTH

Tea is second only to water as the most common drink in the world. A recent study indicates that drinking either black or green tea raises antioxidant levels in the blood, possibly reducing heart disease rate.

The antioxidants found in tea are called flavonoids. More specifically, green tea contains catechins and black tea contains thearubigins and theaflavins. All are powerful antioxidants.

In recent study, 21 subjects were given a single dose of black tea, black tea with whole milk, green tea, green tea with whole milk, or mineral water as a "placebo." Blood samples were taken every 30 minutes for two hours. In all groups drinking tea there was a significant rise in plasma antioxidant levels. How this might affect disease risk is not yet known.
