Alan M. Tart
Alan Tart received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Berry College in Rome, GA. In 1997, after a short stint of teaching high school biology and physical science, Alan joined the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a Microbiologist in FDA’s Southeast Regional Laboratory.
In 1999, Alan became a Regional Retail Food Specialist in FDA’s Southeast Regional Office, State Cooperative Programs Branch. Alan's responsibilities include:
- Evaluating the effectiveness of state and local retail food regulatory programs;
- Providing technical assistance and consultation to regulatory and industry food safety professionals on the FDA Food Code, the Voluntary National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards, and other retail food related issues;
- Standardizing state and local officials in the proper inspection of retail and foodservice facilities and interpretation of the FDA Food Code;
- Delivering food safety training to state, local, and tribal regulatory officials and industry;
- Performing food safety surveillance and oversight for National Special Security Events like the G-8 Summit, presidential inaugurations, Olympics and disaster relief efforts such as Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Gustov; and
- Representing FDA on numerous national food safety and food defense committees.
From 2004 to 2008, Alan was elected by his peers to serve as Co-Team Leader for the FDA National Retail Food Field Team. In this capacity, Alan served as a member of FDA’s Retail Food Steering Committee. This Steering Committee is responsible for formulating and coordinating the Agency’s strategic plan and policy on retail food safety issues.
In 2008, Alan graduated from the Atlanta Federal Executive Board Leadership Government Program – a distinctive program that is designed to enhance the team building, leveraging, and interpersonal skills of government leaders. This program provides essential training to government leaders in such topics as emergency preparedness, recruitment and retention of the best and brightest employees, conflict resolution, communication, and community engagement.
Alan loves spending time and traveling with his family and friends and is very active in his community. He has served as President and CEO of his homeowner’s association of 573 homes since February 2007. Since Jan 2008, Alan has also served as an elected city councilmember in the City of Milton, GA.
