Born and raised in Lamesa, TX. Received B.S. in Agriculture Education from Texas A&M University in 1967; M.Ed in Science Education from Texas A&M in 1968; Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M in 1971; and M.S. in Meats/Food Technology from Ohio State University in 1978.
Served 24 years (1971-1995) in U.S. Army Veterinary Service working in food safety, quality assurance, and animal medicine programs. Served as the DOD representative on the National Advisory Committee for Microbiological Criteria for Food from 1993 until 1995. Became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine in 1987. Awarded Army Surgeon Generals A prefix (equivalent to Professor level of expertise) for proficiency in Veterinary Public Health in 1992.
Professional memberships include the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Food Hygiene Veterinarians, Conference for Food Protection (Chairman, Council III-Science and Technology), International Association for Food Protection (formerly the International Association of Milk, Food, and Environmental Sanitarians), and the Florida Association of Food Protection.
Joined the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in June 1995 as Environmental Administrator, Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) section in the Division of Food Safety. Currently the Environmental Administrator, Food Inspection section, Division of Food Safety, which is responsible for the inspection of more than 44,000 food establishments in Florida.
Married with two boys (15 and 12). Hobbies include golf and coaching soccer and baseball.
