Profile

Dr. Barnett is an educator who specializes in youth development issues. Trained in K-12 developmental guidance and educational leadership, she has had extensive experience working with the Florida Dept. of Education helping to improve critically low performing schools in at-risk communities. She has also conducted research in the area of youth crime and violence in public schools in Florida with a focus on prevention. Other research for the state has investigated perceptions held by students, parents and teachers on school safety which led to the development a safe school survey for Florida schools, analysis of data quality systems for Florida school crime and violence data systems, and a school safety index.

Dr. Barnett is currently co-PI on the CYFAR Florida After School Enrichment Program and conducts research on the impact of after-school programming on at-risk youth. Her USDA CRIS research is on the identification of developmental assets of rural youth for long-term outcomes.

Dr. Barnett teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the area of adolescent problematic behaviors, risk and protective factors for positive youth development, and public policy. Her goal is to educate FYCS students to promote positive youth development, prevent risky behaviors by youth or refer youth to other assistance as needed.
