Nutrition in the Lifecycle

Nutrition in the Lifecycle Slide Sets for Consumers

Programs are targeted to pregnant and parenting teens, young athletes, and elementary school children.

Elder Nutrition and Food Safety (ENAFS)

ENAFS is a curriculum divided into six modules, with between two and five lessons per module. Each lesson includes background information with references, program planning information, lesson plan, overhead and consumer handout masters, evaluation instrument, and reporting form. All handouts provided in English and Spanish, some in Haitian Creole, and several in Vietnamese. Several handouts have been developed in Braille (available through FYCS or Area Agency on Aging).

Nutrition for the Young Athlete

This is a series of eight lessons targeted to athletes in middle school and high school. The information should be valuable to their parents, coaches, and athletic trainers as well. Curriculum includes lesson plans and "Play Book" that includes all of the handouts and worksheets for the program. Program being revised.

Smart Food Shopping for Teens

This is a seven-session curriculum on healthy eating and environmentally friendly food choices that is targeted to teens. It was developed using the Experiential Learning Model. The program includes background information, lesson plans, overhead and handout masters, and evaluation instruments. Topics include cultural and other determinants of food choices, using the nutrition label, the "original health foods" (fruits, vegetables, and whole grains), importance of eating breakfast, and enviroshopping. The video segments (see below) may be included in Lessons 1 and 5. The final session is a grocery store scavenger hunt that allow the youth to apply what they learned in the previous five lessons.

Smart Food Shopping for Teens Video Program: A video was developed to support and enhance the SFSFT program (above). The video may be used as a stand alone, one or two time lesson, by using the lesson plans included with the video. The focus is on ethnic foods (related to lesson one in SFSFT) and Enviroshopping (related to lesson 5 of SFSFT).

Status: The video program was distributed at 4-H training and FL511 training, Winter 2000. Copies were mailed to all counties who were not represented at either training. Primary contacts: Linda Bobroff and R. Elaine Turner.

CHOICES: Charting a Positive Future for Teen Parents

CHOICES is a multidisciplinary program designed to meet the diverse educational needs of pregnant and parenting teens. The nutrition lessons cover maternal nutrition (primary focus), breast feeding, and bottle feeding. Four videos are available to enhance the curriculum: Introducing solid foods (Look Who's Eating!), prenatal aerobics (Shaping Up); dealing with stress (Speak Out! On Stress), and playing with infants (Growing with Baby).

Status: CHOICES curriculum was distributed in early 1990s to all county faculty who attended one of the three in-service training programs held in consecutive years. The videos were distributed to all counties in Florida in 1995, and are available through the IFAS Media Library. Primary contact (nutrition components): Linda Bobroff.
