Dr. Smith’s area is family life. A common theme in her work is family stress, coping, and resilience in daily life and during hard times. She is especially interested in how family, community, and social resources can strengthen families, especially at risk families.
Most of Dr. Smith’s time is devoted to teaching and advising, with courses in Family Policy, Human Services, Family Problems, Family Theory, and Family Violence. She has been honored to receive the CALS Undergraduate Teaching Award and the CALS Undergraduate Advising Award.
Dr. Smith led the development of the award-winning Family Album Radio (WUFT/FM) satellite) and currently is its Executive Producer. Now in its 7th year of production, Family Album has been recognized with the IFAS Grant Prize IMAGE (2005) and the USDA Kobbe Innovation in Extension Award (2009). Dr. Smith participates in other educational outreach activities through the UF/Florida Cooperative Extension Service.
International work has included research and training programs in Korea, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, and Haiti, as well as coursework on families, gender, development, and globalization with international and domestic students and faculty at UF. She co-authored and edited Families in Multicultural and Global Perspective, published by Sage in 2005. Dr. Smith holds a Ph.D. in Child and Family Development, a Master's Degree in Social Work and a B.A. in Sociology. She has been a Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) since 2001.
