MyPlate
MyPlate is the latest graphic from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) designed to represent a healthful approach to eating that promotes health and reduces risk of disease. MyPlate was introduced by USDA in June 2011, replacing MyPyramid, which was the symbol of USDA's eating pattern since 2005.
MyPlate was created to remind us to eat healthfully. The graphic uses a place setting to illustrate the familiar five food groups, Vegetables, Fruits, Grains, Protein Foods and Dairy. Choosing nutrient-rich foods in amounts that support a healthy weight are two keys to building a healthful diet.
The following educational materials can help educators convey nutrition messages that will assist consumers in applying the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010, which were the basis for the eating patterns that are represented by the MyPlate icon. Some MyPlate materials are available in Spanish (MiPlato). Additional downloadable MyPlate and MiPlato educational resources may be found through the University of Florida IFAS Extension publications data base.
